My Urban Fox has 2 quality control problems
1. The Rear washer doesn't work, first time, it had come off the pipe in the boot lid. SWince then has been back to main dealer, but no joy.

2. The clock/odometer LCD seems to be greatly affected by temperature and is hardly readable. Anybody else have this problem or a not too costly solution? :?

How old is it?

I was wondering if it was still in warranty but no it won’t be.

I deal with the detached hose using a crimp clip, the dealer cuts the connection off and fits a 3-mm hose which should have fixed it.

The instrument panel will need replacing or repairing by a company such as BBA Reman.

Possibly a blocked rear jet.

1. Re rear wash/wipe now solved, detached pipe in rear quarter panel, repaired by Wayside of Towcester and works very well. :D

2. Dash panel LCD - have been quoted approx ÂŁ155 by BBA Reman and ÂŁ223 by Wayside which includes a 30% contribution by VW UK - :(
It is a great pity that this was not picked up much earlier by VW when serviced 2 years ago and still in warranty! Looks likely that I will go to BBA Reman in due course.

3. Does the 1.4 have a steel timing chain? The Manual only says that timing chain and tensioner should be checked at 90,000km (54,000 miles). Wayside are quoting me ÂŁ299.00 inclusive to do this - is it necessary at this stage, the car is 4 years old and has done 33,000 miles? :?:

4. We had problems with keys, especially with the automatic lock/unlock of rear boot lid. After I had cleaned and greased the mechanism on the lock, it now works perfectly. Had the keys reprogrammed to solve malfunction, but that cost ÂŁ70 including a new key.

We are still very happy with our Fox, it is a great little car and so comfortable to drive, even up to Scotland in it last year.

The 1.4 petrol is a rubber timing belt, it should be changed every 5 years or 60K miles.

I have owned my red Urban Fox 1.2 since new in May 2006 - used as a third car in addition to our Golf and Sharan.
The Fox has now done about 26,000 miles and is proving very reliable.

However, during the first 6 months there were some warranty issues:-
1. Remote central locking sometimes not responding to key plipper
Remedy: New responder in dashboard
2. Odometer and clock displays fading away at random.
Remedy: Replacement dashboard display.
3. Nearside front passenger window very slow.
Remedy: Window guide rail in door re-aligned.
All work carried out efficiently under warranty by JCB Volkswagen Ashford Kent.

Since then the boot lock seized-up during the very cold weather last winter.
Cured by removing the inside trim on the boot lid and spraying the lock internally and externally with WD40 and letting it soak-in for a while.
I believe that rainwater got into the lock causing some corrosion and freezing in the low temperatures.
Suggest occasional lubrication !

Otherwise no issues. :D

Good value for money.
Preferable over a C1/107/Aygo any day.
1.2 engine has delightful thrummy character and works well with the easy gearbox/clutch.
Like the pineapple fibre headlining - helping supporting Brazilian farmers !
Chain-driven camshaft - excellent.
Uses no oil between annual changes (Castrol Edge 5w-30).
MPG circa 40-45 (not great but acceptable)
In summary an excellent city and rural runabout - with a tardis-like interior. :p

The headlining on my mums 1 year old Fox has discoloured in two areas with strange brown patches. The only other issue has been a faulty handbrake warning switch.
