Valve timing figures

Dear All
Today is the day the cambelt (s) and auxillary belts are being changed, looking at Joe Haynes book there are no timing figures to check the timing I/L and E/X opening and closing, also MOPs,just a couple of sprocket positioning holes aligned horizontally....not really the most accurate...just have my suspicions that the last owner who replaced the belt may be one tooth out...and would like to correct that..

Any timing information?

Thanks

P.S.
It mentions running direction of the belts...why does that matter?

Well it says you need a couple of special tools.

Camshaft locking tool VAG No. T10016.
Crankshaft pulley holding tool VAG No. 3415.

There are 2 timing belts on that engine the main timing belt and the exhaust camshaft timing belt.

You only need to mark the direction of rotation on the belt if the old belt is being reused for some reason.

Managed to "Knock-up" the camshaft and crankshaft holding tools...that crankshaft nut sure was tight...thought it might be left-hand thread...as for the timing figures, the locking tool not only locks the camshafts but locks them where they should be at TDC..so much for altering the timing.

The job continues...

Thats why there are camshaft locking tools!! if it went to mickey mouse for the cambelt then these are often not used and the good old Tippex comes out!!!!! so could be a timing issue still

have you actually had it scanned properly to see whats wrong?

So why do you want to alter the valve timing from standard John?

Crankshaft pulley bolts can be tight or they have thread lock on the bolt, they are only left hand thread if the engine turns to opposite way like Honda.

Don't want to alter the valve timing from standard, just wanted to check it is standard...but after fitting the belts have learned a lot...it may have been a tooth out but is back to where it should be now...
Three belts fitted along with the four idlers/tensioners...had the main belt back on when I remembered the box with the water-pump in it....so took a little longer than expected

Not happy with the marks but you will "knock up" the tools....hummm. what are you going to do if it is 4.56 degrees retarded?

Upper pulley locking tool

This is the toothed belt lower pulley timing mark, no tool required. People often use 2V mark, not the 4V mark.

Did you replace the M19 12 point front pulley bolt with the new M21 12 point bolt and tighten it to 180Nm plus 180 dgress using this counetr hold tool?

Pretty? Well yes it has been said but who am I to judge! One of my cats is far prettier than any tool

OK yes well a Rottler F69ATC could swing it.....

The only problem with that is, in my experience, if the cam to cam locking pins are not in, the exhaust cam moves when it is in the correct position and makes it very difficult to set the transfer belt timing so often I find the are 1 tooth advanced which seems to tie in with the burnt exhaust valve problem.

Dear All
Nothing is wrong,I probably could do with more MPG and maybe a little more power (but it is only a 1.4 ) I just wanted to check if the timing was correct after an unknown changed the timing belts before I got the car.Now I have had it apart I know that the timing is unalterable unless the belts are misplaced by one tooth or more....the timing is now correct....I will now see what happens to my MPG.
